DESCRIPTION:

The Copenhagen opera was designed by the architect Henning Larsen and finished in the year 2005, it is one of the world’s largest opera houses and also one of the most expensive costing around $500mil to build.

Located on the island of Holmen in central Copenhagen, it was strategically placed to be lined up with Amalienborg and The Marble Church.

The building was donated to the city of Copenhagen by the Møller-Mærsk group, and Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller himself was quite involved in the design and building process. When the building was donated to the state, however, many politicians were offended because according to Danish law, the entire cost of the building would be tax deductible, thus practically forcing the government to pay for it.

Inside it is one of the largest theatre buildings in the world , it can seat up to 1700 guests and the stage is made up of 5 separate stages directly connected to make installing equipment easier and to provide different acoustic options to the performing artist. The pit is again one of the largest in the world being able to accommodate 110 musicians and the queen has her own box on the left side of the auditorium closest to the stage.

The foyer has been designed for comfort, based on behavioural research on opera-goers, maximising the wall area for standing against, while still providing views across the entire foyer and one of the best views on Copenhagen.
